About Beth Israel Congregation

Beth Israel Congregation (בית ישראל‎) is a synagogue located at 50 North 6th Street in Hamilton, Ohio, north of Cincinnati. Founded by Yiddish-speaking immigrants in 1901, it was organized by eight families as an Orthodox alternative to Hamilton’s existing Reform congregation. In 1911, it obtained a charter from the State of Ohio as Bais Israel Congregation. Beth Israel moved to the Conservative movement and became egalitarian in the 1980’s.

In 2011, the congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary. Besides marking the occasion with delicious food, activities included extracting a time capsule filled with documents and artifacts buried in the cornerstone of the synagogue building, and replacing it with copies of the existing material plus new artifacts.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

With our values anchored in commitment to scholarship, community-building, tradition, culture, and living Jewishly, Beth Israel is a Conservative synagogue that seeks to engage Jewish families, including interfaith families and those seeking to convert, to live a life filled with tefillah (prayer), tshuva (repentance), tzedakah (charity), and tzibur (community).

Opportunities for Involvement

We welcome the unique gifts and talents of our congregants and invite you to reach out if you'd like to make a positive impact in the congregation and the community with us.
